Description
Notification of different types of activities may be required by some treaties, either in advance or within a certain period after the event has occurred. Typical notifiable military activities are military exercises, movements and manoeuvres, the redeployment of and increase in the size of military forces, and the introduction of new weapon systems. Notifications contribute to transparency, preventing unnecessary alarm about activity that might otherwise be considered ambiguous or noncompliant. They also provide parties with an opportunity to prepare for observation and monitoring. (Handbook, p. 20)
